Knowledge previous to the learning task
This article explains Earl Stevick's theory on how language learning is basically making the appropriate connections between the verbal and the non-verbal imageries. Words are symbols which stand for non-verbal meanings: feelings, pictures, sounds, etc... Mental images are constantly evolving, updating associations through experience. As teachers we should foster these associations between verbal and non-verbal materials and reinforce them in different contexts. We should plan rich inputs appealing to the senses and to the abstract mind at the same time.
