Painting: The Ambassadors, 1533

In this lesson students are asked to describe the painting, paying attention to colours, layout, costumes, objects, body posture, etc... This double portrait by Hans Holbein shows an ambassador and a cleric. Students may try to identify the objects behind them and guess what they stand for. We could try to deduce what the shape at the bottom is (a distorted skull) and why it is there, togethere with the crucifix on the top left corner. We can read historical notes about the painter, about fashion at the time and about the meaning of hidden messages in the painting.
